England manager Thomas Tuchel stated that Jude Bellingham faces strong competition for a starting spot in the England squad ahead of the World Cup, with 14 to 15 players vying for key roles. Speaking in Florida on Sunday, Tuchel highlighted the depth within the team as they prepare to face Costa Rica before the tournament begins.

Thomas Tuchel confirmed that Jude Bellingham faces strong competition for a starting position at the World Cup, with approximately 14 to 15 players competing for key roles within the England squad. The Real Madrid midfielder, 22, is among a deep group striving for spots as the team prepares for the tournament in Florida.

Bellingham appeared in only four of England’s eight qualifying matches, while Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers participated in all. This highlights the challenge Tuchel faces in selecting the optimal number 10. After England’s 1-0 warm-up win against New Zealand in Tampa on Saturday, where Harry Kane scored the only goal, Bellingham captained the side for the first time in the second half as Tuchel rotated his lineup due to tough Florida conditions.

Speaking ahead of a friendly against Costa Rica on Wednesday and the World Cup opener versus Croatia on June 17 in Dallas, Tuchel praised Bellingham’s recent training form after returning from injury. “He looks good in training,” Tuchel said. “He is at a sweet spot, having had his break and showing hunger to return to the pitch.”

Tuchel emphasized squad depth and flexibility, noting that several players are viable starters while others will be options off the bench. Though not confirming Bellingham’s status in the leadership group, Tuchel announced that midfielder Declan Rice will act as deputy captain during the World Cup campaign.
