Southampton secured Jose Fonte for £1.2m from Crystal Palace in 2010

Southampton signed Portuguese centre-back Jose Fonte from Crystal Palace in 2010 for £1.2 million, weeks before Palace entered administration. Fonte became a key player in Southampton’s rise from League One to the Premier League, contributing significantly to the club’s success over the following eight seasons.
Southampton secured Jose Fonte from a financially troubled Crystal Palace in 2010 for £1.2 million, shortly before Palace entered administration. This significant Crystal Palace deal was pivotal as it brought a key player who became a staple of Southampton’s rise from League One to the Premier League and their eventual place in European football.
The Portuguese centre-back had spent two-and-a-half years playing regular Championship football for Crystal Palace, after transferring from Benfica. Fonte helped Palace reach the play-offs in his first season in the Championship. The move to Southampton followed the £1 million signing of Rickie Lambert, the previous season’s League One Golden Boot winner. Both signings symbolized the new Southampton ownership’s ambition after the club dealt with insolvency and relegation troubles.
Though Southampton faced a 10-point deduction early on for breaching insolvency rules, preventing a top-six finish in Fonte’s first few months, he featured in their EFL Trophy win over Carlisle United at Wembley. Starting from the 2010/11 season, Fonte became a foundational member of the Southampton squad. At 26, transitioning from a player trained at Sporting CP and Benfica, he adjusted immediately and notably scored seven goals as a centre-back during his one full season in League One.
His performances earned him a place in the League One Team of the Season, along with the club’s Player of the Season award, placing him ahead of teammates like Lambert and Adam Lallana. With Nigel Adkins as manager, Southampton became only the third club since the Premier League began to attain consecutive promotions from League One to the Premier League—a feat last achieved over a decade prior by Manchester City. Fonte missed just four league games and captained the side at times during this process.
Fonte remained a first-choice player throughout Southampton’s Premier League years, even after managerial changes including Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman. Apart from a brief injury layoff due to an FA Cup match against Chelsea, he was consistently present in the team. Between the 2013/14 and 2015/16 seasons, Fonte missed only four league matches as Southampton secured 8th, 7th, and 6th-place finishes.
He earned a second Player of the Year at Southampton during 2014/15, four years after his initial honor, showing his continued value amid the departure of key teammates like Lambert, Lallana, and Morgan Schneiderlin. When Fonte left Southampton in January 2017 to join West Ham, he was the last player remaining from the double promotion-winning squad.
Over his time at St Mary’s, Fonte accumulated 288 appearances, including approximately 100 as captain. His leadership helped Southampton achieve several milestones—promotions, strong Premier League finishes, and European competition qualifiers. Fonte described signing for Southampton as the best decision of his career, emphasizing the growth he experienced as both player and person during his eight-year spell.
Even in 2024, approaching the end of his playing career in 2026, Fonte spoke warmly about his years at the club and the special connection he felt with supporters during Southampton’s time competing in Europe. Fans continue to reminisce on that era fondly, with Fonte’s contribution a central part of those successful campaigns. His acquisition for £1.2 million remains a prime example of Southampton hitting the jackpot with the Crystal Palace deal.
