Bandai Namco

Tekken 8 director Kohei Ikeda announced his departure from Bandai Namco Studios on June 1, 2026, marking the second major exit from the franchise in five months after executive producer Katsuhiro Harada left. Ikeda’s exit raises questions about the future direction of the Tekken series amid ongoing community concerns.

The Tekken development team just lost its second final boss in six months as Tekken 8 game director Kohei Nakatsu Ikeda announced his departure from Bandai Namco Studios on June 1, 2026. This follows the earlier exit of series patriarch and executive producer Katsuhiro Harada, marking a significant shift within the franchise’s leadership during the current commercial cycle.

Ikeda joined Bandai Namco more than two decades ago, starting his career on Soulcalibur IV before moving to Tekken, where he eventually led the development of Tekken 7 and Tekken 8. His announcement on social media thanked fans for their support and reflected on his long tenure with the company. He recalled the passionate feedback from the fighting game community, highlighting moments where players both appreciated the team’s hard work and urged improvements in game balance.

Despite recent challenges, including community criticism of aggressive balancing changes in the third season patch of Tekken 8, Ikeda expressed confidence that the franchise values will persist with the remaining development staff. Recently, the team gained attention for announcing Yujiro Hanma, a character from the Grappler Baki series, as an upcoming DLC fighter.

Ikeda made clear that he is not retiring but plans to pursue new opportunities as a developer. Whether this involves collaboration with Harada at SNK or a new independent venture remains unknown. The future direction of the Tekken franchise now lies with a new generation of creators following these key departures.
